I first blogged about it in <a href="http://bluemothdoings.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Alhambra%20Star" target="_blank">early 2015</a>. Just before Christmas I saw this Owen Jones canvas for sale in John Lewis:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I can do that, I thought. So I started making another piece.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This one is based on a 3/4 inch equilateral triangle, chopped up in various ways. The scale is rather small, but I have to keep it similar to the other pieces.</span><br />

I'm sure I didn't invent it!<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr0z0Yzhsi7WPyOUAasli_y7wWYOWb5iu4aavSp_GRnCbPwUTfBCSAp6tJaWkqlhamnmB4xa2VHO6Y1gyhhXkrTQWev-vR9hv_-xBUFipn_HZzWD0PH1l-GUyGFRnEdwgr43f4O_8gBMCs/s1600/2016-03-09+14.02.14.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr0z0Yzhsi7WPyOUAasli_y7wWYOWb5iu4aavSp_GRnCbPwUTfBCSAp6tJaWkqlhamnmB4xa2VHO6Y1gyhhXkrTQWev-vR9hv_-xBUFipn_HZzWD0PH1l-GUyGFRnEdwgr43f4O_8gBMCs/s640/2016-03-09+14.02.14.jpg" width="638" /></a><br />
<br />
I drew the pattern on to graph paper and numbered the pieces before cutting them out - that helps me to keep everything more of less lined up.<br />

<br />
The fabrics are genuine vintage - they come from an amazing Australian online store called A Piece of Cloth and I believe they are sources from the USA. So diffferent to work with - the colours are so vibrant. Many of the fabrics were glazed so a bit hard to get the needle through - otherwise I had no problems .<br />

At the moment I am hand quilting this - rather inexpertly - but practice makes perfect!Blue Mothhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07159355772056892837noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7383966134638878642.post-47310432210719679542016-02-24T13:39:00.003+00:002016-02-24T13:39:58.710+00:00That EPP pattern<span style="font-size: large;">There's been a flurry of interest in the <a href="http://bluemothdoings.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/instagram-swaps.html" target="_blank">mini quilt I made last year </a>so here is some more info about how I did it.</span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibsV6fokhRP9E3MM-loRR0JrWwkAqwcTQsgQ_4n_P_OQ_41na0B9VQv5w9GImHDVXWR7uop3PJAouI8IRPLYy7_4AvNccrP5rC-Sj6x4f98kmsPwDucYDRrj0JrsuhjOWLNOv7YT46sKHw/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252811%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="632" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibsV6fokhRP9E3MM-loRR0JrWwkAqwcTQsgQ_4n_P_OQ_41na0B9VQv5w9GImHDVXWR7uop3PJAouI8IRPLYy7_4AvNccrP5rC-Sj6x4f98kmsPwDucYDRrj0JrsuhjOWLNOv7YT46sKHw/s640/FullSizeRender+%252811%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">As you can see in the wire basket in the photo above, I cut my EPP papers out of a sheet of triangles downloaded from the <a href="https://incompetech.com/graphpaper/" target="_blank">incompetech</a> website. I think the edge of the triangle was 5/8 of an inch. To be honest this was a bit small - you could go bigger.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The longer pieces are made up of a row of five triangles of the same size - you can see one of them in the tray to the left of the image above. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The pattern depends on organising the fabrics into dark, medium and light. Each small triangle has three of the longer pieces around it. The dark, medium and light have to be in the right position for the 3D effect to work - I hope you can see that below. </span><br />

I started making log cabins using my long Liberty Lawn scraps. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made no attempt to separate dark and light, and most of the blocks were totally random in terms of colour. All I did in terms of planning was to avoid repeating any design within the block.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This one looked nicely yellow after the first round, so I stuck with it. In the image above, its the one block that stands out. In a good way or a bad way? I left it in anyway.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I ended up with 42 6 inch blocks which I put together 7 x 6 and its big enough for a cot / crib quilt.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It'm thinking about the best way to quilt it - it's so crazy and busy I don't want to add too much.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">For some time now I have been keeping scraps of Liberty Lawn in a little book. I love these detailed colourful prints and I like to remember the name of my favourites. Recently I noticed that I had got to page 100 of my little book and the pages are fast running out.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">It's surprising to think that all of these prints have come into my hands, one way or another, over the years. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now a decision has to be made. What do I do when the pages run out? Start volume 2? Or bite the bullet and start again with a bigger book?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">In the current book, the pieces have just been stuck in at random. If I went for a new book, I could alphabetise them. I have an old A to Z book which might be too big but it has great vintage appeal. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSrwOn3otyzUuaEbgeyYMiEOdPfWXqUmmf7N7EbpxhqnaMV1Bt2-gZ1cjfJJ4CeqGUC9skZBjV6qUO85sb7vkyVq1xQhe-vWP5cKn26un7nys7zB2HhrpCuau1NfXwZFo7sHmEESTIpCTQ/s1600/IMG_2922.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSrwOn3otyzUuaEbgeyYMiEOdPfWXqUmmf7N7EbpxhqnaMV1Bt2-gZ1cjfJJ4CeqGUC9skZBjV6qUO85sb7vkyVq1xQhe-vWP5cKn26un7nys7zB2HhrpCuau1NfXwZFo7sHmEESTIpCTQ/s640/IMG_2922.JPG" width="640" /></a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I will do nothing for a while. I like procrastinating and keeping all the options open. Once a decision has been made you can't go back. </span>Blue Mothhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07159355772056892837noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7383966134638878642.post-3093022161389301842015-11-02T09:05:00.000+00:002015-11-12T09:45:05.370+00:00Keeping the record straight<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Just a quick update. Still trying to use up the Liberty stash but each project seems to require just a little but more that I don't happen to have. There is not much to say about the one-rosette version of La Passacaglia - I just keep going. Round and round. It's now about 25 inches across. No idea what it is or if it will be useful. Which worries my puritan soul. Linking up at Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday.</span></div>

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">As an antidote, I made something quick and useful yesterday. I used <a href="http://www.pinkchalkfabrics.com/pc/patterns/PinkChalkStudio_InfinityScarf.pdf" target="_blank">Pink Chalk Fabrics</a> pattern for the double fold, and used some of my favourite Liberty Lawns. The main fabric is called Phillipa Zebra. At least I bought it years ago from Ebay as that. You can also see Growing Fonder, Mitsi, Phillip Clay and Jonathan. Those last two came recently from V<a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/veryberryhandmade" target="_blank">ery Berry Handmade's Etsy shop</a>. Yes, every project needs more fabric. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeGU7dRvlvLAYdLugfXX6BvFGETBla_lJTGqzuQk867MMor-z8pvW9GaCq28o6b5ZkfTh-qPQaDuwMGtaLJalkLMintXRjt_ikGbzPk6cAS7qyd3gi_JTRkv2EEQrTO_KivvjXZahSDdlD/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252812%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="622" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeGU7dRvlvLAYdLugfXX6BvFGETBla_lJTGqzuQk867MMor-z8pvW9GaCq28o6b5ZkfTh-qPQaDuwMGtaLJalkLMintXRjt_ikGbzPk6cAS7qyd3gi_JTRkv2EEQrTO_KivvjXZahSDdlD/s640/FullSizeRender+%252812%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It's a very quick project using exactly half a meter (two panels, 9 inches by 54 inches which is the Liberty wof). Luxuriously soft and surprisingly warm. I think I might need one in every colour.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is the current state of my Passacaglia. I've never been one for following patterns, and those familiar with the Passacaglia will see that I've gone off piste and beyond the edges of the large Rosette. I want to see if I can expand the pattern indefinitely. Round and round. A break between each round will be good for my sanity.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It's all Liberty and shot cottons. I'm pausing for a while now while I decide on the next fabric.</span></div>

I decided to try a few using my favourite Liberty blues while my Passacaglia is resting.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">First, EPP</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA2dgGfM5BN4YHiuREsDym2qcSE01Os4v0tzvgu_yKiyvR4Cix874nwRHvj_-tlsl93Nt7PvFN1TCEGFhuINjPj7zPvMYLak8uA_PDbcX97ZXdF5inYx03kqB2SsJtiQxBsOISwfHOzVDu/s1600/EPP+from+the+back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA2dgGfM5BN4YHiuREsDym2qcSE01Os4v0tzvgu_yKiyvR4Cix874nwRHvj_-tlsl93Nt7PvFN1TCEGFhuINjPj7zPvMYLak8uA_PDbcX97ZXdF5inYx03kqB2SsJtiQxBsOISwfHOzVDu/s320/EPP+from+the+back.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">While Im happy to make my own templates for more basic shapes, I didn't feel that my compass skills were good enough. I bought some 2 inch clamshells from <a href="http://www.sewandquilt.co.uk/" target="_blank">Sew and Quilt</a> . Sewing them together was a bit awkward as you can't hold the pieces front to front in the usual way. It went together OK but was a bit fiddly. Here they are with the top row appliquéd to a strip of plain fabric.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuBfJHjhZVzMC-NEBaHz1fvm0N0ltb4Gpm76htU1UXKs1idEEx-lTrPIerAiAeK86udZiCEjbTBCSCYU_0T61d9TBpDaNMv1Fk8EUrvR5H8-e6FqHzt-PswzoF28NCoy6dCaV9XeuUHosp/s1600/clams+EPP+panel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuBfJHjhZVzMC-NEBaHz1fvm0N0ltb4Gpm76htU1UXKs1idEEx-lTrPIerAiAeK86udZiCEjbTBCSCYU_0T61d9TBpDaNMv1Fk8EUrvR5H8-e6FqHzt-PswzoF28NCoy6dCaV9XeuUHosp/s640/clams+EPP+panel.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Next I tried appliqué. This involves securing the fabric round the top curve in some way. You can sew it, gather it or glue it. There is also a method where you iron the fabric around the template using kitchen foil. I tried all four of these in my next piece.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuPyakjtdiDZXDqmQWNSk1EMVyg_s2gD1H55HTV-XkYyDCpyNm802Xw2ACaoC1Y0n-SAl8J1bBvPktI3Ae6BttRQ9G1C0G3Fd68lcRdozv5qFv_24NT7_NVi-2Gw-Dyy7MJgz-YcRJ2KO6/s1600/clams+applique+first+row.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuPyakjtdiDZXDqmQWNSk1EMVyg_s2gD1H55HTV-XkYyDCpyNm802Xw2ACaoC1Y0n-SAl8J1bBvPktI3Ae6BttRQ9G1C0G3Fd68lcRdozv5qFv_24NT7_NVi-2Gw-Dyy7MJgz-YcRJ2KO6/s320/clams+applique+first+row.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">You start by securing the first row to another piece of fabric. Them you have to carefully line them up, row by row. For me this was the main disadvantage. With EPP, the pieces fit together naturally. But for appliqué, you have to keep measuring to keep everything lined up. I was not entirely successful. Here's the finished piece:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc4mFdpTn1qKybXtMiA7Uh6rJheMdAZrwrdzBoELEmNJCLwOpCR8_P58Yc8V5dlRXqSer8SX7vSxQ_U7QAVJG-Q0V-h_D6VYRNtNNGvwOd2Mo20AGK5FX3-PJDx4bleNvsuGuli_vWkAHr/s1600/clams+applique+panel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc4mFdpTn1qKybXtMiA7Uh6rJheMdAZrwrdzBoELEmNJCLwOpCR8_P58Yc8V5dlRXqSer8SX7vSxQ_U7QAVJG-Q0V-h_D6VYRNtNNGvwOd2Mo20AGK5FX3-PJDx4bleNvsuGuli_vWkAHr/s640/clams+applique+panel.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Is there a difference between them? Well if there is, it is not a big enough difference for most non-quilty people to see. I think the EPP clams are a better shape, and are more regular, but the stitches are more visible. They both took about the same amount of time. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here are some of the tutorials I looked at - they were all useful in their different ways:</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">These two pieces are going to be hand quilted and made into a pouch. I'm sure I will soon forget which side is which. <br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">a kind Instagram friend sent me a pack of templates for the Passacaglia quilt</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">I'd just finished another EPP project</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Clare who blogs and Instagrams as @selfsewn started one, so it would have been rude not to, right?</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFRHcMf6aFf0NXOhewUew8pLGuRAjmMSlcoNkMRjRXKdHJqFsAAfxslSw6hXUc9SjVEwBb5M2DjbydRl5A0v90MffDg3zrSac7LE4nAQUJYZSt0j2r2aV8_0eBoVEoqO403Z6hSSPrcjmH/s1600/FullSizeRender+%252811%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" height="638" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFRHcMf6aFf0NXOhewUew8pLGuRAjmMSlcoNkMRjRXKdHJqFsAAfxslSw6hXUc9SjVEwBb5M2DjbydRl5A0v90MffDg3zrSac7LE4nAQUJYZSt0j2r2aV8_0eBoVEoqO403Z6hSSPrcjmH/s640/FullSizeRender+%252811%2529.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Is an interesting pattern because its based on pentagons which don't tesselate easily. The pattern for the whole quilt, from <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.0476188659668px;">Willyne Hammerstein's book Millefiore Quilts is a huge undertaking and would require a massive investment of time and fabric. Although the original in the book is not fussy-cut, the pattern is ideal for fussy-cutting and that means lots of waste. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.0476188659668px;"><br /></span></span>

At the moment I'm going slowly, enjoying the process, stitching in the garden with its not too windy. Clare @selfsewn and I are using the hashtag #alittlepassacaglia</span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> Oakshott did an offer for their sample packs and I got my hands on the Lakes pack - lovely blues with a bit of green and purple. It was fun squeezing the pieces out of a five inch square. I used every scrap. The white and brown pieces were from stash.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Last week I finished my second Liberty quilt in a month. This one includes some of the more unusual dark fabrics which many people would not associate with Liberty. It is a mix of four patch and sixteen patch blocks, which make an unexpected secondary pattern.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The back is made from the same fabrics. The dark one here is Susannah, which is also shown in the pink in the bottom left quarter. </span><br />

This one is based on a pattern from Kharraqan in western Iran. It's a two colour tesselation. I had to split each shape into three for the EPP. </span><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">It was made from a sample book (<a href="http://bluemothdoings.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/using-it-liberty-nine-patch.html" target="_blank">you can read how I got hold of that here</a>) and any scrap in my stash which was big enough to cut 4 or 5<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 14.5600004196167px; text-align: left;"> 2</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-size: large;">½</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 14.5600004196167px; text-align: left;"> </span>inch squares.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJSmKiEY297u_J1INNsY_-h2r8GOTV4E38z4Ylh5YPy9gVUB6z9waxnJV7Qpb_QZf_0uIymDO7qw1LQ9DQlPC-Hqb90pARwicx7RP8gqpSbB9bPXweghB7RD45-Xm1c5C-qNJPyyIrrjKi/s1600/2015-06-02+17.21.39.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJSmKiEY297u_J1INNsY_-h2r8GOTV4E38z4Ylh5YPy9gVUB6z9waxnJV7Qpb_QZf_0uIymDO7qw1LQ9DQlPC-Hqb90pARwicx7RP8gqpSbB9bPXweghB7RD45-Xm1c5C-qNJPyyIrrjKi/s640/2015-06-02+17.21.39.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The sample book was very useful as it included lots of unusual darks which were great for contrast. Beautiful as Liberty is, I find it can look fuzzy from a distance if there isn't enough contrast. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">It's big - 72 inches by 84 inches. I had intended it to be bigger but the sample book was running out.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Oddly I seem to have more fabric left than before - partly because through posting pictures on Instagram I was commissioned to make another Liberty quilt by a friend of a friend. She requested pink with contrasting darks. So I had to buy more, naturally. I'm piecing the back of that one now.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-size: large;">I recently joined an Instagram swap organised by Jo who blogs at <a href="http://lifeinlists.typepad.com/blog/2015/04/sign-ups-for-the-handpiecedminiswap-are-open.html" target="_blank">Life in Lists</a>. It is a secret swap, so although I know the person I am making this for, she does not know who I am and I don't know who is making for me. It's been great fun following new people and seeing what they are making, and wondering if their creation is meant for me. All the while I've been neglecting this blog.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Something original seemed required so I had a look around my secret partner's Instagram feed and her Pinterest board to see what she likes. I think I've nailed it. This design is based on one of the lovely geometric ceramic tile designs that are around now. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I started with a small test piece and just kept going.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYZx8Gr3ghUN1APcz_7iEWfkJKAs3bniJrY8kwsQBd5VIdCATccE9n9-XEOCFqPZNRw72OwdhdjYJE5bA4LqgdSfLzhJ3sPv7WBXVxLkhhQ97rBvECZG89ubvSb61TG26j8rYiFstc4Etr/s1600/IMG_0808.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYZx8Gr3ghUN1APcz_7iEWfkJKAs3bniJrY8kwsQBd5VIdCATccE9n9-XEOCFqPZNRw72OwdhdjYJE5bA4LqgdSfLzhJ3sPv7WBXVxLkhhQ97rBvECZG89ubvSb61TG26j8rYiFstc4Etr/s1600/IMG_0808.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It is a surprisingly simple design based on only two shapes.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4CDcpd8rsRlTuwKLHW97ltDvLjF5CWnrMI61gghdwIExQjNQYljd8AYvm8alTR4ad3HEIqjpRhSvtNA4TtaMAJjQIcDJJl_PjMYZ1FcXnxoB6-fzquGJS66F8QlRRsc9ta1wYzVCtPlIW/s1600/FullSizeRender+(11).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="395" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4CDcpd8rsRlTuwKLHW97ltDvLjF5CWnrMI61gghdwIExQjNQYljd8AYvm8alTR4ad3HEIqjpRhSvtNA4TtaMAJjQIcDJJl_PjMYZ1FcXnxoB6-fzquGJS66F8QlRRsc9ta1wYzVCtPlIW/s1600/FullSizeRender+(11).jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The 3D trick is in the fabrics - three shades of various low / medium volume white, grey and cream with a deep red/orange for the triangles.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Of course I had to add a bit of Liberty. Can you see it?</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's the completed top which is about 20 inches across. </span></div>

I've been using it, too. But not fast enough. I went to an exhibition recently (<strong style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Spring Knit and Stitch at Olympia)</strong> where <a href="http://www.wornandwashedfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Worn and Washed</a> had a stall. You may know worn and washed for their curated bundles of soft cottons. They also prepare beautiful £50 bundles of Tana Lawns for the Liberty store. Anyhoo the lady behind the counter, who may have been Kim Porter herself, recognised me as a Liberty addict and offered me something from under the counter. Yes, it was a sample book from a few years ago. I couldn't resist. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibvvXYcQDdp70e-4ScWFosjPEb1pd4juLliQ8a4vUYt0nacpLC2BbjCbENl1kpCYfWakscvFlZ5xcvJgegUkpRzlJXnfq4JRqXLqIMW9XDMnBWjnFs_p3AP2-14aHM3LBnGFBWH9-_8yBs/s1600/IMG_0663.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibvvXYcQDdp70e-4ScWFosjPEb1pd4juLliQ8a4vUYt0nacpLC2BbjCbENl1kpCYfWakscvFlZ5xcvJgegUkpRzlJXnfq4JRqXLqIMW9XDMnBWjnFs_p3AP2-14aHM3LBnGFBWH9-_8yBs/s1600/IMG_0663.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">There were many, many fabrics I had never seen before and lots of dark ones, which I don't usually buy. There were some I didn't like at all. Plenty I did though. After pawing them for about a week I got OH to dismantle the book. There were a few staple holes at one end and a sticky label at the other end, but I worked out that I could get 4 or 5 2.5 inch squares out of each sample. And there were more than a hundred. I decided the dark ones could be teamed with lighter, brighter ones from my stash and started making nine patch blocks, alternating the dark and the light. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">When I got to 81, remembering my maths, I laid them out in a nine by nine square on the floor. There's barely a dent in the sample pile. I could make a full size bed quilt and every block would be different. So thats what I'm going to do. I'm not going to sew any of it together until the end, when I'll decide how to arrange the blocks. There is a patch of paler ones above that might need to be spread around - or emphasised. Not sure yet. Here's my favourite nine patch so far:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I'm going to keep going until I get to 238 blocks (14 x 17) which would give me something 7ft wide by 8ft 6 long. </span></div>

<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Like most people I rarely use cash these days. So I needed a purse for credit cards with a small section for a few coins. It was great fun to make and I used up some scraps. You could use any fabric for the outer piece, but I would recommend a lightweight lawn for the interior because there are so many folds and layers.</span><br />

<b><span style="color: #674ea7; font-size: large;">Warnings</span></b><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This is not a difficult project, but it is a bit fiddly and there is hand stitching involved. This is the third purse I have made and they get better each time. So you might want to make a trial purse using a cheap zip and non favourite fabric before risking some favourite print.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This is my first tutorial and it has not been tested by anyone, so if you are puzzled or I have left something out please leave a comment and I will do my best to help.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I'll be linking up with Lily's Quilts <a href="http://lilysquilts.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Fresh Sewing </a>day.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">What you will need:</span></b><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">For the outer piece:</span></b><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Outer fabric 5 x 9 inches. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Heavy duty iron-on interfacing (fusible stabiliser) like <a href="http://www.cottonpatch.co.uk/acatalog/Peltex-Single-sided-Fusible-Stabiliser-Pellon--71F----per-1-4-metre--10423.html" target="_blank">Pellon Peltex</a> 4.5 x 8 inches</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">12 inch zip / zipper.</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">For the coin section:</span></b></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Two pieces of cotton lawn 11 x 6 inches</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Lightweight nylon zip - cut down to 3.5 inches</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Two 1.5 inch squares in lawn for the zip end tabs</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">For the credit card section:</span></b></div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">One piece of lawn 4.5 x 32 inches. This can be pieced if you don't have a bit that's long enough.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Strips of the same lawn 1.25 inches wide - 2 x 9 inches and 2 x 5 inches.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">4.5 x 8 inch piece of fairly firm iron-on interfacing (fusible stabiliser) such as you might use in a collar, not as thick as the Peltex used for the outer part.</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Clover clips, a thimble and a glue pen are also useful.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Outer Piece</span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Mark a curve on each corner of the Peltex using a large thread reel or similar round object. Cut off the curves. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzsyKaT7H9SglHhDSYn7QbJ4B8Wxtr6q_G-C69EayHILUYIFfm-mtaS1cfF2U2GqzIuDA1IuqIphK7YvVgA73xV0kPoq0CFR5znR4vOWJQmlB4TEdTA_iCuxjWHVtLxmtkeOw_OMevXEB1/s1600/Corners.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzsyKaT7H9SglHhDSYn7QbJ4B8Wxtr6q_G-C69EayHILUYIFfm-mtaS1cfF2U2GqzIuDA1IuqIphK7YvVgA73xV0kPoq0CFR5znR4vOWJQmlB4TEdTA_iCuxjWHVtLxmtkeOw_OMevXEB1/s1600/Corners.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Cut 3 3/4 inches off each side of the Peltex - this will leave a half inch central strip which will allow the outer section to bend.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Fuse the three pieces to the outer fabric as shown in the pic, centring the design on the fabric.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvy4EBwS96uHZa3ghpfKOTUqZsNubF2KqUQAoCeIQyaeCAmaJXADFBxahdPaSNNfctLYXay3YBG-kDxLkmwg0xPCH8HtCrgherJhCvgpDu_tSJxDfpE6zV1xXrR_atXBPgltiKlBdhGLxV/s1600/2015-03-22+13.54.35.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvy4EBwS96uHZa3ghpfKOTUqZsNubF2KqUQAoCeIQyaeCAmaJXADFBxahdPaSNNfctLYXay3YBG-kDxLkmwg0xPCH8HtCrgherJhCvgpDu_tSJxDfpE6zV1xXrR_atXBPgltiKlBdhGLxV/s1600/2015-03-22+13.54.35.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Trim the edges of the fabric if needed. Fold over the edges and glue down. You may need to gather up the corners using a running stitch.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDndIpRMJRjvcFtvzOzFCFrUB__yDIekwsemi7hjlU2DtaPnzNJ-ylk3s-G55lozvBXfV8fvvMt0gSuyufB4bTj7VUlk6uYASY_yVmztOWGztzs4s2pc_SAAe7WxdoZRzHAIYK3y9DNtV6/s1600/Gathering+corner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDndIpRMJRjvcFtvzOzFCFrUB__yDIekwsemi7hjlU2DtaPnzNJ-ylk3s-G55lozvBXfV8fvvMt0gSuyufB4bTj7VUlk6uYASY_yVmztOWGztzs4s2pc_SAAe7WxdoZRzHAIYK3y9DNtV6/s1600/Gathering+corner.jpg" width="251" /></span></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Mark each side of the centre of the zip and the centre of each side of the purse. Open the zip and attach it to the outer purse with clover clips or basting. The ends of the metal part of the zip should not go below the gap in the Peltex, as they will stop the purse from folding nicely. In the pic below I have folded the zip webbing in half so I can use the clover clips while I baste with the yellow thread.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then hand stitch round the zip, going right through the patchwork, the Peltex and the zip as close to the edge of the patchwork as you can. Use a small half back stitch, which should be almost invisible from the outside on a patterned fabric. Start in the middle of each side and check regularly to make sure both sides are even. This is the fiddliest bit.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The image below shows the stitches on the inside, which get covered up when the inner piece goes in.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Bend round the ends of the zip onto the central half inch section of Peltex and glue or baste them down. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Coin Section</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">First prepare the zip. <b> </b>Cut the zip down to 3.5 inches, making sure you don't loose the zip pull. Cover the ends with the zip end tabs. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now mark the middle of the long side of one of your 11 x 6 pieces and mark the middle of your prepared zipper. Machine the zip to the fabric, matching your middle marks.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Press a 1/4 inch seam along the rest of this edge and the other edge. Fold the side piece lengthwise. Top stitch the two sides together. When you meet the zip continue along the same line. </span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sew the other piece on to the other side of the zip in the same manner.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLgab9kARI7i1NDvQZQXGajXleZkkdXgPYfEhrlxWGcGwRlu4pWijDV6WLYF6q8XnZoowUAHHXAYSLGl1s4T4rn_EC5oRPxB8RW6s9suxVi7YQtVHgWb3fOLFNLboc33EyFUxQC0O6SCEY/s1600/2015-03-26+09.31.06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLgab9kARI7i1NDvQZQXGajXleZkkdXgPYfEhrlxWGcGwRlu4pWijDV6WLYF6q8XnZoowUAHHXAYSLGl1s4T4rn_EC5oRPxB8RW6s9suxVi7YQtVHgWb3fOLFNLboc33EyFUxQC0O6SCEY/s1600/2015-03-26+09.31.06.jpg" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now create the coin enclosure. Position the two long pieces one on top of the other, with the zip at the top. Stitch a line in a long curve starting at one end of the zip, down to the other side, and up again to the other side of the zip. This is shown by the pins in the photo below.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Next make the folds which will form a concertina. Fold each flap back across the zipped section and then fold back towards the edge to form a 1 1/4 inch fold. Top stitch the folds. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I had coffee with a faithful blog reader last week. She commented that I hadn't posted recently and its true, I've been on Instagram. But I have been sewing - I'm now on the third arabic / islamic / moorish pattern.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Here are all three together. They might end up being joined together, or not.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> I could then print off as many sheets as I wanted. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The piecing got a bit complicated in the middle, where the shapes are not regular. It's so easy to end up sewing the wrong edges together but I resorted to numbers and arrows.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge3MTEV38IkmtQdU5nYAdi6R1kxRtqfjs7D3iXk-MRN2YPEc4A-wJnj2aPKJdumMbRZnxTCEqrND-cWW7tUbk3mb7Ik6bVTGGuTF49NbiLmX3dQvSzH4TU_UaePJ3HaevzFMDYLgtSW2cM/s1600/4+rounds+joined.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge3MTEV38IkmtQdU5nYAdi6R1kxRtqfjs7D3iXk-MRN2YPEc4A-wJnj2aPKJdumMbRZnxTCEqrND-cWW7tUbk3mb7Ik6bVTGGuTF49NbiLmX3dQvSzH4TU_UaePJ3HaevzFMDYLgtSW2cM/s1600/4+rounds+joined.jpg" width="624" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The original plan was to stop at four pieces, and the block is currently about 14 inches square, but I might make it bigger. Depends how much of the Oakshott I've got left. Dithering and floundering as usual.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">"This postcard from Egypt has been knocking around the house for years. So I am not sure why now was the right time to tackle the pattern on the right in EPP. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">On metric graph paper and it seemed about the right scale so I thought I'd do a small sample piece. Here it is pinned to the wall so perhaps you can get an idea of the scale from the pins. The smallest piece is 1cm square. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQapOb1hX8Bgqrkka6W3INAVHg3edzCjtFRVv1J5rgbDYWZWHZcy9wppHly_niGnc91SopWXzijaJvd_b4tMd322cYe1sq_ekVMkywJPmfaQk4ouAc8vQjF6U2vLbAtTWHJr8HaVTXyqrX/s1600/FullSizeRender+(7).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQapOb1hX8Bgqrkka6W3INAVHg3edzCjtFRVv1J5rgbDYWZWHZcy9wppHly_niGnc91SopWXzijaJvd_b4tMd322cYe1sq_ekVMkywJPmfaQk4ouAc8vQjF6U2vLbAtTWHJr8HaVTXyqrX/s1600/FullSizeRender+(7).jpg" width="425" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The fabrics are all shot cottons, which makes like easier when doing small piecing. I had a lot of blues to I decided to use them all, hoping it would give the effect of mosaics or tiles. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Just after starting this I got a Sewline glue pen. Glue basting is certainly quicker than traditional basting but I am not sure how easy it will be to remove the paper pieces.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It's good fun trying to work out how to construct a pattern from an image. EPP was probably the only possible method, at least on this scale. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">There are so many of these fascinating patterns on floors, walls and in books. I might have to wait a while before I can look at this one, though...</span></div>

Not Alhambra but I'm still calling it Alhambra Star. I used mostly leftover Oakshotts with some Kaffe Fassett shot cottons thrown in. It is not an exact copy of course. I like the way many of these patterns have an outline which could be done in bias binding, but did not feel ready to tackle that.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1NuZnIxieXhgFdSsgJ3N6Y8RYFBqfp-CvEz1fCHw6jWlraKC3ZudgUXSUjdhqVp7mb1QwzVMJKXKAvDrDvRefu4sDVZisVrxNN7nvdnduRppjJBKY87_jJdi0N2hYtPxK_OM6uVvyJont/s1600/cropped.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1NuZnIxieXhgFdSsgJ3N6Y8RYFBqfp-CvEz1fCHw6jWlraKC3ZudgUXSUjdhqVp7mb1QwzVMJKXKAvDrDvRefu4sDVZisVrxNN7nvdnduRppjJBKY87_jJdi0N2hYtPxK_OM6uVvyJont/s1600/cropped.JPG" width="308" /></a><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">You can see a a shed load of these on <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/dittanym/geometric-patterns/" target="_blank">here</a> - there are so many - and with EPP (English Paper Piecing) you can make <b><i>any shape you like</i></b> without worrying about Y seams - as long as you are not in a hurry. </span><span style="font-size: large;">A little bit obsessed with these patterns. They seem to rattle around in my tiny brain until I can process them. This is a six-fold pattern based on a 60 degree equilateral triangle but there are many more complex ones. </span><span style="font-size: large;"> I just might have a go at doing some more of these and perhaps join them together. Or not. Dithering as usual. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The finished piece is just the right size for a Miss Ted quilt - so she is borrowing it for a while. It might also make a cushion / pillow or a wall hanging. I like the way the different blues show up in this photo.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvv9rYrX0_PzmLnoYb4RjvcxCs9jJIcpLHMhkcx-d2rePdJga_t9kUunlRnM7VFk6CHiorXkD0zXfWqjDcnwmGqfwO1lRs2g59fEtAt3UbF5vrJ4JCagrwM8ybW3Yez-_z5cYBIkD34F0R/s1600/with+miss+ted.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvv9rYrX0_PzmLnoYb4RjvcxCs9jJIcpLHMhkcx-d2rePdJga_t9kUunlRnM7VFk6CHiorXkD0zXfWqjDcnwmGqfwO1lRs2g59fEtAt3UbF5vrJ4JCagrwM8ybW3Yez-_z5cYBIkD34F0R/s1600/with+miss+ted.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">At the moment there are no quilts or minis on my walls. No room really. But I have also to admit that I have rationalised my fabric addiction guilt by telling myself that everything I make has to be useful. Otherwise I'll be knee deep in it and own a hundred cats. Anyone else share that problem? </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Hmm. The Germans would have one word for fabric addiction guilt. How about Stoffgiftschuld?</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This design started when I was cat-sitting my son and his partner's new slightly crazy rescue cat. She is very much an outdoor cat, but is having to be kept indoors so she knows where her new home is. She is stir crazy and needs company. After about an hour running madly from window to window to look at birds and squirrels, she finally settled. </span><br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It looks like one of those intricate Moroccan tilings that you see at the Alhambra - but it is a simplified version based on a 60 degree triangle which could be worked out easily on triangle graph paper. Many of the islamic tile patterns are far more complex, with many more points in the circle. I've collected loads of them on a <b><a href="https://www.pinterest.com/dittanym/geometric-patterns/" target="_blank">Pinterest board here</a>.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The fabrics I am using are mostly Oakshott scraps. I find these much easier for small piecing as the fabric is thinner than quilting cotton - and those tiny triangles around the central hexagon are - well, tiny. <span style="font-size: large;">Not entirely sure why I embarked on this ridiculous tiny thing in the middle of winter when the light is so terrible that I can barely thread a needle. Excuse to sit still for extended periods drinking coffee and listening to the radio, I suppose.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It is a complete mixture of some favourite fabrics - Kaffe Fassett, Oakshott, Architextures, Botanics and (just to show I'm up to date) Doe. Oh, and the little black diamonds are Gramercy. It's big enough for a purse if I add some filler pieces to the edges. It would have a dark side and a light side. I might make the inner part dark and light too - could help me to find things in there.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The idea came from this 1950s ceramic tile (the one on the right).</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The image has been sitting on my Pinterest board for months if not years, waiting for the right moment. It is a ceramic tile from the 1950s (possibly from the Carters Tile Co in Poole, Dorset). </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I do find Pinterest really useful, not only for "parking" images which catch my eye, but also for storing things I am tempted to buy. If I go back to them I often find I don't "need" them any more. You can look at my boards through the link on the right. Instagram is great too, but I find I can't get back to the older things as they are swamped by the new. </span></div>

</div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Last week I posted about the outer part of this purse. The inner part was just as fiddly. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The inner pieces were totally unlined and without interfacing - there are enough folds and layers to make it strong enough.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhU-YBgThpNxGnqu4qH2xl711lAijYayVF8Wq7BbpHn58c64xsbQdFdmkmaIqdio3tITrKUzPZ1-Ns6A5MTTLKJkxQaodoc7qEemmyA2EzAwzmHmj3iAd4p8UlAH4lguqIW0PRH1ghmBj5/s1600/Interior+on+line.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhU-YBgThpNxGnqu4qH2xl711lAijYayVF8Wq7BbpHn58c64xsbQdFdmkmaIqdio3tITrKUzPZ1-Ns6A5MTTLKJkxQaodoc7qEemmyA2EzAwzmHmj3iAd4p8UlAH4lguqIW0PRH1ghmBj5/s1600/Interior+on+line.jpg" height="400" width="391" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I was a bit worried that the inner part would be too big, and it was very tight. I would shave half an inch off the credit card and purse part if I make another.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I wanted a metal zip and there is not much choice of colours (does anyone know a good UK supplier of zips?) Getting the zip in was just as time consuming as I thought it would be. The only way to do it was by hand. The zip was a bit too short and that didn't help. First I stitched the zip to the outer pieced hexagons using a very small half back stitch. It took a couple of goes to get both sides even. After that I slip-stitched the inside in place.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi4MEpish1OheX5dPY5MXWvmnjIhJLzg_FcCccneHz5ORLbvBu40TdvlLKk6RmPysp0JOWB-cnKkRDa-xUKPMBoBgpkMfx9EJ6f2vzR24MjIW-a93c4nky5X2sVdjqBp6a22VBkY5xlUtz/s1600/Sewing+in+zip.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi4MEpish1OheX5dPY5MXWvmnjIhJLzg_FcCccneHz5ORLbvBu40TdvlLKk6RmPysp0JOWB-cnKkRDa-xUKPMBoBgpkMfx9EJ6f2vzR24MjIW-a93c4nky5X2sVdjqBp6a22VBkY5xlUtz/s1600/Sewing+in+zip.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The finished product has a soft feel and appearance that I rather like - the stitches show and the fabrics look a bit fuzzy because they have been handled so much. Oh Ok, I admit it is covered in cat hairs and sweater fluff too. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Okay, okay, the photos are blurry too. There is not much light at this time of year. Roll on Spring.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Overall I'm pretty pleased with this. The Peltex worked. Definitely a step up from the first trial (<a href="http://bluemothdoings.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/liberty-coin-purse.html" target="_blank">see about that one here</a>, as well as the £196 leather purse from Liberty that I was trying to copy).</span></div>

Some knitting has been done but nothing blog-worthy. Yesterday I got going on making a second liberty purse. <a href="http://bluemothdoings.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/liberty-coin-purse.html" target="_blank">The first one</a> was much too floppy and the zip insertion was poor. I have been using the purse though, and decided it would be better if it hinged at the bottom. Although I like some of the patterns available, particularly Sew Sweetness's <a href="http://sewsweetness.com/2013/05/greenbacks-wallet-trio.html" target="_blank">Greenbacks wallet</a>, I still want to avoid a bound edge as I know I can't do those very well.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's the piece I decided to use for the outside - it's all Liberty fabrics. I used tiny scraps so did not have to buy anything.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr3OquSj-L2D9bwke8GHjGw3c8UonGSQw-arCcSeA4u46UZW7jGPc0ZOaR_IlLpCmLp9OyCjVvUsJuspUBsoE0hePnOF6aEtlrNNipMQCwaWepPwyBtzYEjMrTFHd96SiBjH71gkQ66QUc/s1600/IMG_0076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr3OquSj-L2D9bwke8GHjGw3c8UonGSQw-arCcSeA4u46UZW7jGPc0ZOaR_IlLpCmLp9OyCjVvUsJuspUBsoE0hePnOF6aEtlrNNipMQCwaWepPwyBtzYEjMrTFHd96SiBjH71gkQ66QUc/s1600/IMG_0076.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">To make the purse firmer I ironed on a bit of heavy duty Peltex. There were three pieces to line up, the gaps are there so that the purse will fold properly. I had trouble lining it up, as the Peltex would not stay flat. I pinned it to the ironing board and beat it into submission. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtdH03QLky9l-UqUUIcAHhhgo-9DdmHGBJDSZsOKkgA3GQZZkZIkD73v9ybYL17OiFkloFLX4bzXLLttYzGRzBLK3WA2msXeZ76gre9vA1SQ045A_SjKbMEG1arVr5p_XEjfJNApWTAchK/s1600/IMG_0080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtdH03QLky9l-UqUUIcAHhhgo-9DdmHGBJDSZsOKkgA3GQZZkZIkD73v9ybYL17OiFkloFLX4bzXLLttYzGRzBLK3WA2msXeZ76gre9vA1SQ045A_SjKbMEG1arVr5p_XEjfJNApWTAchK/s1600/IMG_0080.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It seemed to stick quite well. Next I turned over the edges and sewed them on to the Peltex. When I got to the corners I gathered up the excess fabric like this:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCRuqhrBcaG7zNUizCrLRRienmzZ6QKB_9bPD4dvhFvUYgqvCcXhyzNyAfYwTjeCrQHDPa_H_rXBxXxVweeHUWUaTNrEvPQpHuJA6-8C4tTa3VIVD6TkilKm4gLNVamKLAbpnCYpoIX-V6/s1600/IMG_0081.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCRuqhrBcaG7zNUizCrLRRienmzZ6QKB_9bPD4dvhFvUYgqvCcXhyzNyAfYwTjeCrQHDPa_H_rXBxXxVweeHUWUaTNrEvPQpHuJA6-8C4tTa3VIVD6TkilKm4gLNVamKLAbpnCYpoIX-V6/s1600/IMG_0081.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Now it looks like a little book. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: large;">Next to tackle the innards - I want some credit card slots and a small zipped compartment for coins. I still have no idea how I'm going to insert the zip. Glue might be involved.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Oh. Well apparently yesterday was the last sunny day for a while. So an indoor shot of the finished quilt will have to do. I hope you can see the spiral quilting, which goes across the small low volume stars but stops around the EPP and appliqué areas. That left me with endless ends to sew in.</span><br />

<br /></div>
<text-align: start=""><span style="font-size: large;">Of course you can't see the whole quilt here, but I've posted more than enough images of the individual blocks since I started in April. All the posts have been <a href="http://bluemothdoings.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/EPP" target="_blank">labelled EPP</a> if anyone wants to look.</span></text-align:><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><text-align: start="">This project started with an exercise in EPP shapes - I wanted to do something other than hexagons. Once I started, I wanted to carry on and make something useable. The Monday link up at Life Under Quilts kept me going - thank you, Jessica! </text-align:>Triangles, squares, pentagons, octagons, rhomboids, curves and yes, hexagons have all found a place. There is loads of fabric left. Can't believe how much. Maybe I will sell fabric packs when there is another royal event.....</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This trellis block might still be my favourite and I may well use it again - next time on a bigger scale, maybe with a dark centre and pale trellis pieces.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
One last count for the <a href="http://lifeunderquilts.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/monday-morning-star-count-201445.html" target="_blank">Monday link-up</a> - there are 1206 pieces. You won't see this again unless there is an amusing disaster in the wash. </span><br />
